Motorola Morrison - first Moto Android phone?

Ah, Motorola. They used to be the giants of the phone world. Y’know, back in the 80s and 90s. Nowadays, though, it’s fair to say they’re really, really not one of the giants of the phone world. They went from the phenomenal success of the RAZR, to the abject failure of the RAZR, though to the abject failure of everything.

However, it just takes one handset for a company to make a massive comeback (Palm will agree with that…), and according to MiniSuit, in Motorola’s case, that handset is the ‘Morrison’.

I should point out that the Motorola Morrison’s been known about for ages, thanks to a leaked roadmap from T-Mobile, but MiniSuit’s got the first proper spy pic up there, so he’s the one I’m crediting on this story.

So, what to make of the Moto Morrison… well, it certainly fits the rumour’s we’ve all heard about Motorola wanting to release a ’social smartphone’, aimed more at teens and young social networking types, rather than high-end power users. And if there’s one thing I’d say straight off the bat about the Morrison, it’s this: that, there, is clearly not a phone designed for power users.

I mean, just look at it. That’s not blue, it’s BLUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUE. Granted, it’s quite funky, like, but if you want a phone with the minimalist design of the Toshiba TG01, then the Morrison’s going to be a tad gaudy for your tastes. Having said that, the kids’ll probably lap it up; the LG KS360 proves there’s a market for neon phones aimed at teens, and if you chuck a neon phone that they can actually do stuff on (because of Android), you’re onto a winner.

So, the question is: will this be Motorola’s Palm Pre? Will this be the handset that turns things around for them?

I’m not convinced it will be, since I reckon they’d have been smarter going for an all-out, top-end smartphone. But hey, it’s nice to see ‘em finally trying to put the RAZR behind them!
