Google voice search now understands Mandarin Chinese on Nokia S60 phones

Thursday, November 5, 2009

Google have announced that their voice search software now understands Mandarin Chinese on Nokia S60 phones allowing Google to move in and grow their search business in that area of the world.

The software is currently capable of understanding various English accents and also a few Mandarin accents although not all just yet. As well as working on the Nokia S60 range of phones, Mandarin voice search will also come soon to Android based phones as well as the iPhone in China.

Google admit that the software might not be as polished as English versions of the app, but that it is working at an acceptable level for release on S60 phones.

Over the next few months the software should eventually be able to track more accents like the English speaking version of the software does, and when that happens there are a lot of subscribers to mobile phone networks due to the massive population in China that could potentially search Google by voice.

Orange UK streaming music service new tariff called ‘Monkey’.

Orange UK has partnered with Universal Music and 4Music (a derivative of the terrestrial TV Channel 4), to launch a free streaming music service for new tariff called ‘Monkey’. The tariff is for prepay customers, which makes the whole data consumption angle more interesting (prepay users are not usually looked after in terms of data usage!).

Users will be able to both create and share playlists on the web, and somewhat unsurprisingly will be sent Mobile Ads too. Luckily, as the ‘yoof’ market (which this tariff is squarely aimed at) is apparently accepting of this kind of thing, it should be no problem.

You’ll be able to get a bit of Monkey in Orange stores and Phones4U stores now, and then from September in other channels. Channel 4 will be doing its bit and promo-ing things across its various TV and Web properties.

Clearly Orange is aiming to target users who perhaps don’t have the high-tier smartphone-type handsets, and those who are unable to consume existing pay-for music services - so it’s going to be interesting to see how popular this is, and how it plays out. I wonder if Orange will release usage stats some months down the line?

This out-of-the-box experience is what has enabled SEVEN to drive near 100 percent adoption of its services on many key devices.

Accelerated user adoption is evidenced by the recent launches of SEVEN on flagship devices such as the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71 at AT&T and Hutchison 3G properties in the UK, Italy and Australia; the Samsung Instinct S30 at Sprint (NYSE: S); the Nokia N97 at Telefonica and 3 in the UK; the SonyEricsson W995 at 3UK; and the Samsung Finesse at MetroPCS .

Finally, in the first half of this year, SEVEN added mobile email for Android devices to its portfolio of services. Tesco Mobile adds ‘unlimited’ tariff

Tesco Mobile have announced a new ‘unlimited’ tariff, taking in both texts and calls.

It’s a pay-monthly contract, and rolls in at £30/month - in addition to which, it’s SIM-only, meaning you need to bring your own device to the party.

So if you are based in the UK, and just talk+text, I think this would be a pretty good deal - in the sense you would know exactly what the bill would be at the end of the month. However, if you use data or make international calls, I can see there being extra costs.

Modu Gets Launched

Friday, July 24, 2009

Modu has been developing a tiny handset to work with a range of different peripherals, depending on your needs. Multiple sleeves provide a couple of options for a more traditional phone, but car mount, bike and media centre sleeves will also be options. The especially cool teaser should give you a taste of what this device hopes to do for mobility.

As for the reviewers’ first impressions, they highlight that the core Modu product is extremely basic (no Wi-Fi or 3G), but the release of new jackets down the line will really determine how far the product goes; if other manufacturers don’t pump out their own sleeves, Modu will be stuck with “a very small brick that makes phone calls”. The lack of a real number pad, touch input, and obscenely tiny size make Modu impractical on its own, so getting at least one sleeve will be something of a necessity. The graphics are pretty dated, apparently, and the majority of the “express” sleeves aren’t what you’d call stylish.

Modu will be retailing for around $130 locally on Cellcom, which is refunded in full if you fill out a questionnaire - free ain’t bad for something so experimental. What do you guys think, would Modu fly in North America?

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

BlackBerry Media Sync Desktop Manager supports Mac supports Mac OS 10.5.5 and higher is scheduled be released sometime in September. We’re not sure exactly when in September, but once it’s out, it will finally give Mac users out there the ability to easily add/remove apps, create/restore backups, update their firmware, sync with iTunes, and manage multiple BlackBerry devices all in one app. Needless to say, this latest version of Desktop Manager will bring a whole new world of convenience for BlackBerry owning Mac users across the globe.

Sure, we would have wanted it to be already available for download today, but a month and a half of waiting isn’t at all that bad, and at least this gives us something relatively new to look forward to come September. If you want more info and be updated on its development, you can head on over here and sign up to be part of their mailing list.

Sony Ericsson’s bracelet phone

Friday, June 19, 2009

Over the years we’ve seen quite a few interesting, strange and stupid mobile phone form factors coming from R&D departments of major cellphone vendors, in a form of patent applications.

Very few of them make it further then a drawing board, but they still are interesting to look at.

Well, here’s one more cellphone form factor that I will put into a “strange” category. This time coming from Sony Ericsson:

Sony Ericsson bracelet phone

Described in a patent app called simply “Mobile Terminal” the device is intended to be worn as a bracelet, somewhat similar to the watch phones we’ve seen already. But it can also be used in a two hand mode, when you need a faster typing:

…when the mobile phone terminal is worn like a bracelet by putting the ring section on the user’s arm or the like, the portability of the mobile phone terminal is improved, and the user can see the display surface of the display device and can operate the key buttons with fingers of the other arm different from the arm on which the ring section is worn. On the other hand, when the ring section is removed from the arm, the user easily can see the display surface of the display device of the terminal body section while holding the ring section with both hands and operating the key buttons, which can achieve high operability and convenience.

Well, while interesting, the design is strange enough that I am pretty sure it won’t make it into the line-up of regular Sony Ericsson phones anytime soon.

On the other hand, I have been hearing rumbles about the new “Essence” line of exclusive/radical design phones/accessories that SE can not make up their minds of whether to proceed with or not.

Looks like we have another new device announcement via the CommunicAsia Expo! Chinese manufacturer Haier has announced their first Android-powered device, the H7. Pictured above, the model on-show was a prototype only (unfortunately). However, the specs on the H7 are said to include a 2.8″ TFT LCD touchscreen, a 2MP camera, miniUSB connectivity, MicroSD expansion, FM stereo, Bluetooth and GPRS/GPS.

She looks a lot like an HTC Magic clone to me, but that’s just my take. The Haier H7 is scheduled to launch for around $150 in France this September.

Huawei U8230 and C8000

Wednesday, June 17, 2009
The Huawei U8230

The Huawei U8230

The good folks over at Huawei have introduced two new devices via the CommunicAsia 2009 Expo and Conference in Singapore.

The first is the Huawei U8230. Running Android, it features a 3.5″ LCD touchscreen that allows users to switch between a full and half QWERTY keyboard. Of course, Google apps are highly integrated, with Google Chrome on-board allowing optimal use of Google Maps, Google Talk and more.

The Huawei C8000 is a Windows Mobile device that runs a 2.8″ touchscreen. Most notable with this device is its power management. Huawei claims that the C8000 should have enough juice to play video files continuously for up to 8 hours. Ridiculous!

The Huawei C8000

The Huawei C8000

Spokesperson for Huawei Terminals Glory Chueng commented on the new devices:

“Having joined the Open Handset Alliance in 2008, Huawei is rapidly moving forward with the development of cutting-edge high-end handsets, especially smartphones powered by Android and Windows Mobile operating systems… The U8230 and the C8000 handsets on display here at CommunicAsia take the interactivity experience of smartphones to a whole new level and Huawei is looking forward to working with our customers to bring them to market later this year.”

Stay tuned for more details on the Huawei U8230 and C8000 as they become available.
