Nokia is reportedly dabbling in some weird science trying to cook up a method to provide mobile phone users with an alternative way to charge their handsets by harnessing the power from electromagnetic waves. While that maybe a thing of the future, Samsung’s got an alternative charging solution for the here and now.

It’s a bit simpler using solar energy, and no, it’s not yet the Blue Earth. This is the new Samsung E1107 Crest Solar. It actually looks like the Samsung E1100, but flip it over and you’ll notice that this one packs a full-sized solar panel. As far as charging it using the suns power is concerned, leaving it under the sun for an hour can provide 5-10 minutes of extra talk-time. Likewise, its 800mAh battery can be charged the conventional way by connecting it to an AC outlet. Apart from that, it features a 1.52-inch CSTN 128×128 65K color display, dual-band GSM (900/1800MHz), mobile tracker, FM radio, and a built-in flashlight. Safe to say, this isn’t meant for power-users.

It’ll start rolling out this month in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. It’s already available in India for 2,799 INR (USD$59) albeit being called a different name, the Samsung Solar Guru. Sorry folks, no mention about it being released in the North American market, but that’s alright, just as long as Samsung serves up the Blue Earth as its replacement in the region.
