Japanese 3G Kindle Hands-on

Toshiba’s Biblio is touted as an e-book reader. Instead of an electronic paper display like ones found in established e-book readers, such as Amazon’s Kindle, the biblio makes do with a traditional 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen with an extra-long 480×960 resolution. The advantage here is that the Biblio can render crisp color images rather than grayscale, but the e-ink display is more battery friendly and is said to cause less eye strain.

It features 7GB of user-accessible storage on board for books, and also has a slide-out dynamic keyboard that can display a numeric pad in the portrait orientation or full QWERTY in landscape. Books and other content can be downloaded thanks to a Wi-Fi connection. Opera Mobile 9.5 browser is preloaded onto the handset, which includes YouTube and Flash support, as well as AJAX scripting. Moreover it has a 5.1Mpix camera module, and an electronic dictionary module.

Mobile phones spotted in Reggie Perrin

Mobile phones spotted in Reggie PerrinLeonard Rossiter is one of the greatest comedy geniuses who’s ever lived, and many people reckon his finest hour was The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin (in the interests of fairness, though, just as many people reckon that series had a tremendously weak script, and was made great solely by Rossiter and the other actors’ performances). Anyone who thinks that remakes are the work of Satan had best look away now, because the remake of that classic series, Reggie Perrin, is actually rather good.

Oh, and yes, it’s got mobile phones in it.

Well, come on, in a series that’s all about becoming disconnected and alienated by the world around you, a boring job, and the various ways the world can make you crack up in spectacular style (including having onscreen fantasies about snapping your boss’s neck), mobile phones are going to get a mention. Because not everyone loves them as much as me, let’s be honest.

And so, Reggie (played by Martin Clunes) gets an LG Viewty. Reasonably decent phone at what it does, showing its age in the modern world of mobile phones. So, was it chosen because of that, to make it a proper counterpoint to Reggie, a man whom the exact same things could be said of?

Or was it because someone on the production team likes ‘em?

Either way, it ends up making sense. I can’t see someone like the character they’ve crafted in Reggie Perrin using something like an HTC Magic, no matter how hard I try.

Although it would’ve been nice if they stuck a sneaky reference to Nokia in, when they did the episode set in Finland that had ‘globalisation’ as a theme. Us mobile phone types could have guffawed for ages, then.

So, what of Reggie Perrin the series, then? Well, a weird thing’s happened. Watching it objectively, it’s not actually that laugh-out-loud-and-wet-yourself-giggling funny… and yet, I really like it. I tune in religiously to watch it every week, and in all honesty, for the life of me, I can’t work out why I like it. Maybe it’s the pretty harsh lens it casts modern life through. Maybe it’s the fact that Martin Clunes plays downcast and fed up better than anyone else I can think of. Maybe it’s the fact it’s got personality coming out of its ears, despite not, objectively, being that hilarious. Maybe it’s because I can just feel them building up to the same fake suicide ending the original series had, which was genuinely poignant.

Or maybe it’s because it’s got Lucy Liemann in it, who knows…

With the AT&T-bound Heron, listed specs being a 2.8-inch touch screen, 3 megapixel camera with flash, aGPS, 3G. HTC Touch Pro2, Diamond2 Also Going to AT&T

Two more HTC devices are coming out soon, and they’re biggies because they are the Touch Pro2 and the Touch Diamond2.

AT&T is the last US carrier to announce it’ll be getting the Pro2, though here it is named the HTC Fortress. We wouldn’t be surprised if the name sticks, much like how the Touch Pro became the HTC Fuze. The Touch Diamond2 is named the HTC Warhawk.

HTC Fortress:

htc-fortress

Supposedly scheduled for launch as early as tomorrow (which doesn’t sound at all right considering we haven’t heard even any rumors up to this point), the HTC Fortress has:

  • 3.6″ WVGA display
  • 3.2 MP Camera with Autofocus
  • WinMo 6.1 with AKU6 (we assume upgradeable to 6.5 at some point)
  • Triband AT&T 3G
  • aGPS

We’ve noticed that none of the slides we’ve seen so far today have mentioned WiFi, so we don’t know if they are included but just left out on the spec sheet, or if they just won’t have it. Seems silly that WiFi would not be included to ease the bandwidth burden AT&T’s experienced lately.

HTC Warhawk:

htc-warhawk

Scheduled for August 24, the Warhawk should have Windows Mobile 6.5 on it from the launch. But just as any other rumor or tentative release date, these specs could change at any time.

The Warhawk will also have:

  • 3.2″ WVGA touch display
  • dual-band AT&T 3G
  • 3.2 MP Camera
  • Video Share
  • aGPS

AT&T Blackberry Plans Include 4 New Devices

This is great news. We had heard the Magnum was confirmed for AT&T but it is great to hear that the other three are coming there as well. This will give the Blackberry lineup a large boost.

So let’s go through each one and see what the slides say, and what info is already circulating about those devices.

Blackberry Onyx

bbonyx

While most of the specs are identical to the Bold, a couple key changes are the 3.2 MP camera, and the slide also mentions using a micro USB connector instead of the standard Mini USB that RIM has used for eons.

The style also looks a little different. It’s reminiscent of Bold vs Curve 8900. The below crystal-clear picture shows off the Onyx, reviewed earlier by Kevin at Crackberry.

bb-onyx3

Blackberry Magnum

bbmagnum

Such a detailed picture, isn’t it? The Magnum is being touted as the “Blackberry Bold portfolio evolution”. We’re excited about this one, as it’s supposed to have full QWERTY as well as HVGA touchscreen. Nice!

The Magnum is also bragging up a Navigation evolution. Huh? Should be interesting to find out more about this mysterious handset, for sure. Here’s a fuzzy pic of what the Magnum should really look like.

bb-magnumfuzzy

Blackberry Pearl 3G

bbpearl3g

Not much needs to be said of this one, as it is a natural upgrade to the current Pearl line. A much needed upgrade, considering the Pearl dates back a good 3 years. This will be of the non-flip variety and will sport triband AT&T 3G, as well as a high resolution display (exact res TBD). We hope the Pearl 3G will look a little more stylish than the one in the slide.

Blackberry Gemini

bbgemini

Also known as the Blackberry Curve 8520, the Gemini is well-named because of the look and feel of it. Here’s the confusing part though — according to our previous reports, the Gemini is supposed to come with an optical trackball (or trackpad, whichever you want to call it) instead of the usual Curve-style trackball, yet the above slide mentions it comes with a trackball.

By the looks of it, the Gemini is meant to be more of an entry-level Blackberry as it won’t have 3G, it may have GPS but not sure yet, and 2 MP camera with no flash. Picture below.

bb-geminireal

As of yet we don’t have any release dates for these handsets, but it’s refreshing to see a whole slew of new phones to replace the aging Blackberry devices currently for sale on AT&T. Your thoughts?

Nokia and AT&T

We hope you’re having a fun time keeping up with the schload of leaked internal specs for forthcoming AT&T phones, because we’re not done yet. It’s Nokia’s time to shine, as they supposedly have four phones on deck for the 2nd largest US carrier.

Until the release of the E71x last month, things between Nokia and AT&T were rather quiet. The last major phone released was the 6650, which became EOL only a few short months after it was launched.

For you Nokia fans — and there are a lot of you out there — hearing about these four new handsets are like a breath of fresh air. Let’s check them out.

Nokia Mako

nokia-mako

For a landscape QWERTY device, the Mako is the most uniquely designed that we’ve seen in a long time. But on first impression, it looks rather clever. Instead of having a bulky look, the keyboard appears like it easily tucks into the phone without adding any extra size.

The Mako runs on Symbian S60 3.2, the same as the E71x and the 6650.

nokia-mako1

If we had to guess, this will be intended more as a messaging phone than a smartphone, because the specs are ho-hum. Only 128 MB internal memory with expandable slot, 2 MP camera, and a 2.5 mm headphone jack (Really? 2.5? Really?), for example. But this new design could certainly spark the interest of some of the younger folks.

The slide mentions an early June release, though we tend to disbelieve such a notion simply because we haven’t heard anything about the Mako until now. But we’ve seen crazier things happen.

Nokia Grouper

nokia-grouper

The Grouper almost looks though Nokia is actually finding inspiration from the Motorola RAZR. The Grouper is a super thin clamshell with external music controls, running Series 40, and offers plenty other standard specs for a mid-range phone.

Below is the pic taken for the FCC filing, and everything looks like it’s going straight to AT&T here, complete with CV button.

nokia-grouper-live

Anticipated release date is the end of July.

Nokia Snapper

nokia-snapper

The Snapper seems to be the 6555’s replacement. Another standard clamshell, the Snapper has almost identical specs to the Grouper, and is music-optimized. Feel free to check the above slide to get exact specs, but nothing we can see really stands out to us.

Anticipated release date is August 7.

Nokia Thresher

nokia-thresher

As seen above, the Nokia Thresher has a very N-series look to it, complete with a sporty slider style. The Thresher has a few neat features to help it stand above the Grouper and Snapper, such as:

  • 360 degree optical joystick
  • 3.2 MP camera
  • Uplink noise cancellation
  • Navigation and entertainment enablers

Perhaps not the most loaded device on the planet, but certainly it has a few things going for it. This one will apparently hit stores September 18.

Motorola Heron Brings More Android to AT&T

Earlier today we discussed breaking news about the HTC Lancaster becoming the first Android phone on AT&T, a big shocker to many considering the company was quite hush-hush about what the future held for the Google mobile OS.

Good news, Android fans — that’s not all AT&T has in the pipeline! The Motorola Heron, aka Iron Man, is still on the roadmap for the holiday season.

There were some rumblings almost a month ago that the Heron was in the works, but there was no information as to what specs to expect with it.

moto-heron1

Let’s go over some of the specs on the Heron.

moto-heron

As you can see, nothing terribly mind-blowing, though the 2.8″ QVGA touch screen isn’t shabby considering it’s a slider that reveals a full qwerty underneath. The video capture also looks nice, as AT&T takes the time to brag up the 24 fps QVGA capabilities.

The Heron is geared up for a November release, but we can’t be certain as to how accurate these slides are, or how old they truly are.
