Modu Gets Launched

Friday, July 24, 2009

Modu has been developing a tiny handset to work with a range of different peripherals, depending on your needs. Multiple sleeves provide a couple of options for a more traditional phone, but car mount, bike and media centre sleeves will also be options. The especially cool teaser should give you a taste of what this device hopes to do for mobility.

As for the reviewers’ first impressions, they highlight that the core Modu product is extremely basic (no Wi-Fi or 3G), but the release of new jackets down the line will really determine how far the product goes; if other manufacturers don’t pump out their own sleeves, Modu will be stuck with “a very small brick that makes phone calls”. The lack of a real number pad, touch input, and obscenely tiny size make Modu impractical on its own, so getting at least one sleeve will be something of a necessity.The graphics are pretty dated, apparently, and the majority of the “express” sleeves aren’t what you’d call stylish.

Modu will be retailing for around $130 locally on Cellcom, which is refunded in full if you fill out a questionnaire - free ain’t bad for something so experimental. What do you guys think, would Modu fly in North America?

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone hadding to Europe

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone will be getting Europe in the Autumn known simply as the 6760 Slide when it is released and if the early word is correct, it will have a few feature tweaks too.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone will be getting Europe in the Autumn with clever messaging phone, suited to those who live for their social networks and love sending SMS and email on the move. Connection to your Exchange server, most email services and online networks such as Twitter and Facebook plus Google Talk and Windows Live IM systems, provides the 6760 with more than enough appeal on the software side and although criticised for its unconventional looks, we like the fact the S60-powered device doesn’t conform.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone
will be getting Europe in the Autumn On the hardware side, the screen is a 2.4? QVGA item which works in both landscape and portrait, Assisted GPS is built in and on the rear of the phone you’ll find a 3.2 megapixel camera. If this information is correct, then it trumps the Surge’s 2 megapixel camera. Oddly, nothing is mentioned about 3G or Wi-Fi, however if Nokia want the 6760 to be taken seriously, we can’t see both of these being omitted.

Nokia 6760 Slide QWERTY phone
will be getting Europe in the Autumn will be available in black, red and white, and we should hear a solid release date soon.

T-Mobile’s 2009 Android Time To Motorola Morrison picture.

Wednesday, July 22, 2009

T-Mobile’s 2009 Android Time To Motorola Morrison picture. This time around we can make out 3 distinct hardware buttons which previously were unidentifiable due to the white background - now Android makes a lot more sense. The buttons are (1) back, (2) home and (3) call/menu/action/something. It’ll be interesting to see how that last button with the 4 boxes functions considering the needs for “Call” and “Menu” both need to be addressed, unless done somehow or somewhere else.

Also of interest is that this version of the Motorola Morrison is black and blue as opposed to previous pics we’ve seen that showed a white and blue model:

If Motorola were to offer black and white versions with different interior colors like pink, green, orange, etc… they could really have a hit on their hands with the teen market. Of course it all depends on who they’re targeting, what the price range is and whether or not the phone works well. Hopefully we’ll find out in late 2009 as this sucker is supposed to hit for the holidays!

Samsung Mondi Got WiMAX

Samsung Mondi Available WiMAX-Enabled At August 1st has announced the commercial availability on Sprint Clearwire network in Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland. As the first U.S. device to make use of WiMAX, the Mondi is sure to grab a lot of attention, despite being limited geographically - even then, we’re hearing that WiMAX will roll out to 10 major American cities by the end of the year. Odds are we’ll see more mobile devices in this vein taking advantage of WiMAX, while LTE will lure in more traditional handsets. Will had a look at the Mondi back at CTIA, and it was a pretty smooth device - a widget-enabled user interface has been painted on top of Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and it comes with plenty of handy preloads, like Fring, Gypsii, Route 66 GPS navigation, and Opera 9.5. The specs aren’t anything to sneeze at, either:

* 4.3″ touchscreen, 800 X 480 resolution
* Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, WiMAX connectivity
* 4 GB on-board storage
* 3 megapixel camera
* HDMI video out

If this is your bag, the Mondi will cost you $349 on a 2-year Clearwire contract, $449 with no strings, and will be available at Best Buy.

Sony Ericsson Android with retailer Expansys

Sony Ericsson Xperia (X5?) Android phone aka “Rachael” has got a big touchscreen display, and is built on Qualcomm QSD8250 Snapdragon platform. Snapdragon has some pretty amazing amazing specs – up to 1 GHz CPU, HD video decoding ,12mpx camera, GPS, broadcast TV and Wi-Fi support. Though it remains to be seen which of them make it into a new SE Android handset.

Sony Ericsson Android game confirmed by retailer Expansys now that they have a preorder page up. Code-named Rachael, and branded as the X3, Expansys offers a healthy spec sheet:

* 4″, 800 x 400 touchscreen
* 2G: 850/900/1800/1900 (Quad-Band)
* 3G: 900/2100 (Dual-Band); HSDPA (10Mbps), HSUPA (2Mbps)
* 8 megapixel camera with autofocus and 8 x digital zoom
o LED Flash
o Image Stabilization
o Smile Shutter
o Face Detection
o VGA Video Recording
* POP3, SMTP, IMAP4, MS Exchange e-mail
* miniUSB, 3.5mm AV connector
* Bluetooth (2.1), Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11g), AGPS

The Hero’s nice and all, but considering we heard the X3 is going to be packing a 1Ghz processor, it’ll be the monster Android handset for awhile, and combined with all of we’ve been seeing of the X2 lately, Sony Ericsson’s next couple of quarters look noticably brighter than their last one. We had seen what was supposedly the user interface Sony Ericsson was going to use for Rachael, but the video didn’t show the music player widget pictured above - who knows if it was fake or not, but we’ll be finding out soon enough.

It’s easy to see the similarities with the Magic - in fact, replacing the trackball with a jog wheel is just about the only discernable difference so far. It’s hinted that this will be geared towards the lower-end of the spectrum, which makes sense since HTC’s efforts on the upper end are currently occupied by the Hero. It would be cool if they could bring the Sense UI down to the more inexpensive handsets, but I guess we’ll have to wait for some screenshots to know what’s going on with the HTC Click.

HTC a new smartphone" HTC Leo"

Tuesday, July 21, 2009

HTC a new smartphone" HTC Leo" which is likely to be some sort of a clamshell phone. It’s said that the phone will feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, an internal WVGA (480 x 800) display with 16:9 aspect ratio, an external QVGA display and supports Open GL 2.0. HTC is also rumored to release some other smartphones including Click (an Android-powered smartphone), Mega and Rome. Sadly, there’s no word on release date yet. (the picture above is just an old HTC Omni mockup)

new device might be similar to the HTC Omni. When it comes to the graphics capabilities of the device, the fact that there might be support for OpenGL 2.0 included in it also suggests a Snapdragon processor, it seems. HTC is also rumored to release the Click, Mega and Rome – these are probably just codenames. The Click is supposed to be an entry-level Android phone but we have no details regarding the phone.

Samsung Omnia Pro B7320

Samsung Omnia Pro B7320 is a “look-alike” of Blackberry device. With a comparatively small 2.4inch display which is not touch-sensitive, 7320 Pro is a normal Windows mobile phone, if you ask me. The camera glued into this handset is also a bland 3MP model compared to the impressive 5MP and 8MP cams of other Omnia siblings.

Although this phone comes with a built-in GPS, the smaller display may refrain it from being the complete replacement of a PND. Although this “Samberry” sports an HSDPA feature, it is reported that it supports the download speeds of upto 3.6Mbps only. This QWERTY candybar sports FM radio supporting RDS, and a brand-new Wiz Pro software too.

In Samsung Omnia Pro 7320 3MP Camera Mobile Phone, the users can directly access the hot contacts, photo gallery, music player and the “freq-used” apps from the home screen itself. Micro USB port on the right side of the phone helps to connect it to the PC and also tot he charger. There’s also a special mobile content pre-installed on the S7350H, including “romantic mobile theme” and “smart seasonal wallpapers,” which change automatically according to the upcoming calendar event. For instance, there are special wallpapers for such days as Valentine’s Day, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, and so on.

Specs wise, there’s a 2.6-inch WQVGA screen, 3G, GPS, 5 megapixel camera, and microSD memory card slot. Pricing is unknown at this stage, but we think it will be just a little more expensive than the original S7350…

unannounced LG Chocolate BL40

Monday, July 13, 2009

LG Chocolate BL40 is expected to be launched in August, and will be the 4th Black Label Series phone. Looking a lot lengthier than most touchscreen phones out in the market, the BL40 will come a 4-inch full touch screen to support its mouth

LG BL40 is an unusual handset, first of all because of its 4.0 inches touchscreen display that has a resolution of 800 x 345 pixels and a 21:9 aspect ratio. The display is covered with tempered glass, thus being scratch-proof (just like the screen of LG Secret).

As we can see in the video, the new phone also has a camera with Schneider-Kreuznach lens and flash – probably of at least 5MP.

We can also see a headset jack on the top, which might be a 3.5mm one.

The other known features of LG BL40 include:

* Multi-touch input
* Active Flash UI
* Virtual QWERTY keyboard
* HSDPA 7.2 Mbps
* Wi-Fi
* A-GPS

LG should announce the Chocolate BL40 sometime later this year. Until then, here’s the video we’ve been talking about:

Blackberry Tour

Blackberry Tour 9630 is now available for purchase on both Verizon and Sprint. We applaud the ability to choose for ourselves which carrier to use.

At $199, there is no difference in price between the two. Sadly, neither have WiFi yet, though Sprint has acknowledged plans to upgrade the Tour to WiFi (as well as all new smartphones) sometime next year.

Certainly the addition of the Tour will breathe fresh life into the Blackberry CDMA lineup.

For a refresher, here are the specs on the brand new Tour.

* Dual-band CDMA/EVDO Rev A (800/1900 MHz)
* Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz)
* 2100 MHz UMTS/HSPA
* 2.44 inch, 480 x 360 pixels TFT display with 65k colors (nope, it’s not a touchscreen)
* 35-key QWERTY keyboard
* GPS / A-GPS
* BlackBerry Maps
* Full HTML web browser
* DataViz Documents to Go
* Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP
* 3.5 mm headset jack
* Music, video players
* 3.2MP autofocus camera with image stabilization, flash and video recording
* 256MB internal flash memory
* microSD card support, up to 32GB
* 1400 mAh battery
* Talk time: up to 5 hours
* Standby time: up to 14 days
* 112 x 62 x 14.2 mm
* 130 g

Other than WiFi, is there anything else missing from the Tour that would keep you from buying it? (Besides being CDMA vs. GSM, of course)
