Samsung WEP870 300x377 Samsung Announces Three New Bluetooth HeadsetsSamsung WEP850 Samsung Announces Three New Bluetooth HeadsetsSamsung WEP470 300x224 Samsung Announces Three New Bluetooth Headsets

Three fresh Bluetooth headsets are on the way from Samsung: the WEP850, WEP870, and WEP470. The first on the left, the WEP870, is a compact mono headset that can be connected with a stereo earbud if you’re listening to music rather than taking calls, and can pair up with two devices simultaneously for those packing a utility belt-worth of phones. It’ll be going for $89.99. The middle headset, the WEP850, focuses primarily on noise cancellation, and runs for $69.99. Not bad if you’re looking for something a little sleeker. Finally, the WEP470 is more basic at the $39.99 price point, but emulates dual-microphone noise cancellation through some black magic they call “packet loss concealment”.

Thursday, August 13, 2009

Blackberry 8310 Curve now adds an internal GPS receiver with support for AT&T Navigator turn-by-turn direction service and push-to-talk (PTT) capability–an AT&T exclusive. An amalgam of the svelte BlackBerry Pearl and the more business-oriented 8800, the 8310 Curve is the smallest, lightest BlackBerry phone that includes a full QWERTY keyboard.

The BlackBerry Curve 8310 combines RIM’s long-valued push email and messaging platform with a host of advanced multimedia features, including a 2-megapixel camera and stereo Bluetooth (for listening to music via wireless headphones). This quadband phone operates on GSM 850/900/1800/1900 networks and can handle high-speed data connectivity via AT&T’s EDGE network, with availability in more than 13,000 US cities and along some 40,000 miles of major highways. It also offers global voice roaming in over 190 and data roaming in over 130 countries.

The biggest difference between the original Curve and the RIM BlackBerry Curve 8310 is the addition of GPS. With this feature, you can use Curve as a handheld navigation device with the addition of a location-based service (LBS) or navigation software, such as Google Maps for Mobile.

Sony Ericsson Launch New Jalou Fashion Phone

Sony Ericsson Launch New Jalou Fashion Phone Yes, this Jalou is perfect for girls who like their tech a little more feminine than the normal mid-range mobile phone, but may be a touch too girly for anyone else.

Sony Ericsson Jalou is also tiny, measuring just 73×45, but quite a thick 18mm, and weighing a scant 84 grams. This does mean the screen is only a 2″, 240×320 resolution item, but the phone is 3G with a 3.2 megapixel camera, a stereo FM RDS radio, music player and A2DP Bluetooth, so it easily meets the minimum spec standard needed today. What makes the Jalou stand out is its mirror key, which, as its name suggests, turns the screen into a mirror! You’ll also find a new step counter called Walk Mate and an interface which brings the signs of the zodiac to your standby screen.

Sony Ericsson Jalou
will also be available as a limited edition, designed in conjunction with Dolce & Gabbana. The rose coloured phone will feature 24 carat gold plating and come with satin storage bags and a D&G branded headset. Both phones are scheduled for Q4, but price has yet to be announced.

Nokia N97 Mini

Tuesday, August 4, 2009

Nokia N97 Mini actually there’s nothing much to talk about here. Except for the overall and display size, the specs are practically the same as on the original Nokia N97. Except for the internal storage, which has been reduced to 8 or 16GB, depending on model.

Eldar says that display specs are very close to the ones we’ve seen on Nokia 5530 XM. That gives us about 2.9” size, 16M colors, 640 x 360 px resolution and automatic brightness control. The savings in overall device size come from dropping the Nav button.

So, to some it up, Nokia N97 Mini has all the features and specs of Nokia N97, in a smaller body, with smaller display and lower internal storage.

And the point of having Nokia N97 Mini at all? Price and size.

Nokia N97 will be about 100 EUR cheaper then it’s bigger brother. As for the size – not everyone is happy to carry around a brick of N97 size in their pocket. But might be tempted to get the device with similar features in a more traditionally sized format.

Nokia thinks that these two factors combined will open significant new markets to Nokia N97 Mini, and even have some expectations for it to repeat the success of Nokia N95. Which does not look too realistic for me.

Overall, Nokia performance in a touchphone segment is starting to look more and more worrisome.

So far they’ve managed to come up with only 2 new full touchscreen devices – Nokia 5800XM and N97. Almost a year after these two have been announced, we only see minor dumbed down variations of an old models. While Samsung, LG and everyone else around them is churning out one interesting touchscreen phone after another.

I know that touchscreen is not everything in a mobile handset. And Nokia is doing great with their in non-touch smart devices. But touchscreen phones is an important and rapidly growing market segment, and Nokia seems to be asleep at the wheel here.

I hope that it’s because Nokia is too busy in making a new type of Maemo/Qt based touchscreen device, that will blow our socks off when it’s announced. In the meantime reducing their efforts of making great Symbian touch handset, until the OS catches up with QT based touch UI in Symbian^4, sometime in 2011.

But I really want to hear something about this in Stuttgart… Because the patience is starting to wear thin even among most rabid Nokia fans. And if Nokia N97 Mini is the main device announcement of Nokia World 09, things will only get worse.

Samsung Pixon12

Samsung Pixon1 wich has recently announced an addition to their Pixon line of mobile handsets.Samsung Pixon12 is a top of the line cameraphone, but resolution isn’t the only thing that makes this a beautiful handset as it also has a 3.1″ AMOLED touch screen with a 10,000:1 contrast ratio, a fast-image saving feature with only 2 seconds of downtime between shots, an auto-focus feature, a 28mm wide angle lens and WiFi support.

Pixon12 Feature Highlights:

* An autofocus, 28mm, 12 megapixel camera lens with both Power LED and xenon flash.
* 3G with HSDPA and HSUPA radios.
* GPS and Wi-Fi.
* A 3.1” 480×800 AMOLED touchscreen.
* Standard OS with TouchWiz user interface.

The original M8800 Pixon was an attractive phone with an excellent 8 megapixel camera and a responsive touchscreen interface. For the Pixon 12, Samsung have decided to overhaul the technical aspect of the handset and only tweak the style, thus the new phone bears more than a passing resemblance to the Pixon. It is, of course, the camera which will drive the majority of Pixon 12 sales.

Leaving aside the question of whether a camera phone will ever truly compete with the compact camera in terms of image quality, there’s no doubt that a resolution of 4000×3000 provides the basis for some impressive shots, plus Samsung have promised their lens will be very high quality, so provided the sensor doesn’t let the side down, we’re in for a treat with the M8910! In addition to software enhancements such as face, smile and blink detection, geo-tagging and a smart mode, the Pixon 12 will feature touch autofocus, which sees the camera focus on the exact spot you touch on the viewfinder screen. In order to make the camera more usable in all situations, Samsung have lowered the ’save’ time in-between shots to around 2 seconds, meaning you can take more photos in the same amount of time than before.

The camera will also shoot video at 30fps and a resolution of 720×480.Samsung have been listening to feedback from the Pixon too, as they have included Wi-Fi in the Pixon 12, which joins v2.1 A2DP Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE and HSDPA/HSUPA in the data connection line-up. A microSD card slot will accept cards up to 16GB – which you’ll need given the large file size of a 12 megapixel picture – plus the phone has the usual line-ip of entertainment features such as an FM RDS radio, music and video player and a variety of games. Aside from the camera, we’re also looking forward to seeing the beautiful AMOLED screen in action!

Orange UK streaming music service new tariff called ‘Monkey’.

Orange UK has partnered with Universal Music and 4Music (a derivative of the terrestrial TV Channel 4), to launch a free streaming music service for new tariff called ‘Monkey’. The tariff is for prepay customers, which makes the whole data consumption angle more interesting (prepay users are not usually looked after in terms of data usage!).

Users will be able to both create and share playlists on the web, and somewhat unsurprisingly will be sent Mobile Ads too. Luckily, as the ‘yoof’ market (which this tariff is squarely aimed at) is apparently accepting of this kind of thing, it should be no problem.

You’ll be able to get a bit of Monkey in Orange stores and Phones4U stores now, and then from September in other channels. Channel 4 will be doing its bit and promo-ing things across its various TV and Web properties.

Clearly Orange is aiming to target users who perhaps don’t have the high-tier smartphone-type handsets, and those who are unable to consume existing pay-for music services - so it’s going to be interesting to see how popular this is, and how it plays out. I wonder if Orange will release usage stats some months down the line?

SEVEN announced added 50 new devices

SEVEN announced added 50 new devices with one solution, multiple services, operating systems and form factors, and most importantly expand the list of services provided on any specific device even after launch has been a key differentiator. For the majority of supported devices, SEVEN is fully embedded with a choice of personal and corporate email services already pre-configured. This out-of-the-box experience is what has enabled SEVEN to drive near 100 percent adoption of its services on many key devices.

Accelerated user adoption is evidenced by the recent launches of SEVEN on flagship devices such as the Nokia (NYSE: NOK) E71 at AT&T and Hutchison 3G properties in the UK, Italy and Australia; the Samsung Instinct S30 at Sprint (NYSE: S); the Nokia N97 at Telefonica and 3 in the UK; the SonyEricsson W995 at 3UK; and the Samsung Finesse at MetroPCS .

Finally, in the first half of this year, SEVEN added mobile email for Android devices to its portfolio of services. The new solution was released in the second quarter as a Beta offering for the SEVEN online community, which acts as a user advisory board for SEVEN, providing on-going feedback on new features and ease-of-use for SEVEN products. A recent survey shows that 92 percent of the community members would recommend SEVEN to friends, family and colleagues, another measure of SEVEN’s success and ability to drive adoption and loyalty from mobile end users.

Tesco Mobile adds ‘unlimited’ tariff

Tesco Mobile have announced a new ‘unlimited’ tariff, taking in both texts and calls.

It’s a pay-monthly contract, and rolls in at £30/month - in addition to which, it’s SIM-only, meaning you need to bring your own device to the party.

So if you are based in the UK, and just talk+text, I think this would be a pretty good deal - in the sense you would know exactly what the bill would be at the end of the month. However, if you use data or make international calls, I can see there being extra costs.

T-Mobile will be lining up HTC’s Touch Pro2

T-Mobile will be lining up HTC’s Touch Pro2 is pretty much similar to many other high end smartphones in the market, where it boasts an intuitive touchscreen display and a user interface that makes it a snap for customers to simplify their communication and mobile Internet experience while staying connected and informed at all times - subject to battery life, of course, as these kinds of high end devices tend to sap battery power like nobody’s business. Folks who want to pick up the HTC Touch Pro2 in mocha finish from T-Mobile can do so from August 12 onwards.

Easily making room for T-Mobile’s 3G network and helping you remain connected in most public places using built-in Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g) connectivity, one can definitely tell that the HTC Touch Pro2 is not meant for casual users who check their email accounts only once a week. The HTC Touch Pro2 boasts superior data delivery and an enhanced Web-browsing experience, where you will also be able to use this as an impromptu GPS navigation device as well as location-based services. The 3.6″ color WVGA touchscreen display can slide back and tilt upwards to reveal a full-QWERTY keyboard that would definitely go some ways in helping one decide whether you like to type messages using a virtual or actual keyboard. The screen’s position and size is good enough for reading and composing email, surfing the Internet, running applications and playing games on-the-go. Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera with autofocus capability, Straight Talk technology that integrates e-mail, voice and speakerphone experience into a simple manner that responds to e-mail via a call, making it a snap to organize conference calls from group e-mail.

There is no word on pricing, so we’ll just have to keep a keen eye out on this. Rest assured, the next 12 days ought to see more details revealed for the HTC Touch Pro2.

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

Nokia 5800i XM just passed through FCC, and all the documents show pretty much the same handset, with similar specs and looks as the original 5800. Except for the Wi-Fi connectivity, which is lacking in Nokia 5800i.

Nokia 5800i update looks rather strange for me. Former Nokia handset upgrades with the “i” index usually improved the specs and features of the device, while this one, with the removal of Wi-Fi antenna, seems to be a minor downgrade.

On the other hand, the importance of a price in this market segment seems to be pretty significant. And if Nokia wants to have a device closer to XM5530 in price, but still able to take full advantage of Nokia services that need GPS location, Nokia 5800i XM might be that handset.

Nokia N97 launch still ringing

Nokia N97 launch still ringing decrease in dimensions has meant some changes to the slide out QWERTY keyboard, most notably the omission of the four way navigational key on the left of the N97’s keyboard. In its place we can clearly see arrow keys that sit in the top right corner of the keyboard. On the reverse of the phone the N97 mini gets a nice slab of metal for a battery cover but unfortunately lacks the sliding lens cover for the camera which (and correct me if i’m

screen is visibly smaller (though not by that much) resulting in a phone that isn’t as wide as it’s bigger brother but that’s about all we can guess from the leaked photos. The appearance of these photos raises more questions than it answers. Why release a phone that is only marginally smaller than its bigger brother? Will Nokia strip out features similar to how they put the 5800 on a diet to create the 5530? Will the N97 Mini still run Symbian? And obviously the biggest question of all, it this phone genuine or an extremely professional fake? Well, for the time being at least, we can’t answer any of them. Keep an eye on the Blog over the coming weeks as we hold our breath for an official announcement from Nokia.
