Android 1.6 NDK is available for download

Android 1.6 NDK, release 1 is available for download Today is a companion to the SDK that provides tools to generate and embed native ARM machine code within your application packages. This native code has the same restrictions as the VM code, but can execute certain operations much more rapidly. This is useful if you're doing heavy computations, digital processing, or even porting existing code bases written in C or C++.

upgrading to this release is highly recommended. It provides the following improvements:

* The ability to use OpenGL ES 1.1 headers and libraries If your application targets Android 1.6, your native code can now directly call OpenGL ES 1.1 functions to perform graphics rendering. This will help those programs that need to send large amounts of vertex data to the GPU. Note, however, that activity lifecycle and surface creation must still be performed from the VM. This NDK contains a new sample ("san-angeles") that shows exactly how to do that with a GLSurfaceView object.
* The ability to target either Android 1.5 or 1.6 devices The NDK parses your project's properties to know which platform release it is targeting. It will then automatically use the proper headers and libraries to generate your native code. Any application that targets 1.5 will run on Android 1.5, Android 1.6 and any future official system release. Targeting 1.6 should, thus, only be done if your application requires new 1.6 features / APIs, like the ability to call OpenGL ES 1.x headers from native code.
* The ability to put your native sources under your application's project tree You can now conveniently place all your sources (C, C++ and Java) under the same tree, for editing or version control purposes.
* Many fixes to the NDK's build scripts The changes to the build scripts fix some annoying bugs and also increase host system compatibility.

Orange offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS

Orange offering the Apple iPhone 3G and 3GS later this year It’s not much of a stretch to imagine these two events are linked, as when Apple chose O2 to exclusively sell the iPhone, the carrier occupied the highest step, now they are set to be replaced by T-Orange, or whatever the name will be, Apple have signed on the dotted line with them, a deal no doubt made easy by Orange already selling the iPhone in France.

The news also comes on the back of rumours O2 would be losing exclusivity when their contract ran out on November, and one can also wonder as to the impact O2’s Palm Pre exclusive deal had on their Apple relations.

At this stage, Orange have only released the fact the iPhone will be available with them via their own shops and ’selected high street partners’, with nothing concerning phone pricing, tariffs or the final release date as yet. It’s also worth noting that Orange do not mention anything about exclusivity, so expect O2 to still offer the phone for sale too.

HTC Desire just passed the FCC and got its Wi-Fi certification

HTC Desire just passed the FCC and got its Wi-Fi certification (PDF)! none of the documents are particularly revealing, but they do provide reassurance to Verizon customers eagerly awaiting Android that they’ll have some options.

HTC wrapped up confidentiality on External Photos, Internal Photos, Test Setup Photos and User Manual that last through December 31st, 2009 ensuring that we’re left with very little to nibble on.

HTC Desire is not just a series of 2D rectangles and it IS an actual phone – we promise. And the little label on the battery might look a little something like this, Meanwhile the Wi-Fi certification is equally as informing… pretty much only revealing that the phone has Wi-Fi:

Verizon Wireless Android scene is really starting to pick up steam as the Motorola Sholes aka Motorola Tao also got FCC approval today. Now we’re awaiting leaks/rumors, an official announcement and of course more info on the Passion and Predator! Keep pumping out the good stuff VZW!

Nokia E55 E-series cellphone

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Nokia E55 E-series cellphone different from other E-series mobile phones is that Nokia has attempted to compact the QWERTY keyboard that consists of around 20 buttons.Though the handset is for business users and professionals, Nokia E55 gives it a sportier look. Another good feature of E55 is that it looks identical on both the sides and supports features like 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and two cameras.

Nokia E55 E-series cellphone size and the weight factors won’t be much of a problem with E55 as the manufacturer has balanced the ratio and made the handset pretty light to carry along.

Nokia E55 E-series cellphone in front panel of Nokia E55 has a 2.4 inch TFT display that has a brilliant screen resolution even when it is viewed in bright sunlight. However, the navigational keys are a slight different from the regular E-series phones like E75, as Nokia has tried to fit in around 20 buttons in very little space available. However, utmost care has been taken when deciding the key locations so that it does not affect your dialing speed.After you jump see more pictures and read more about E55

Nokia E55 E-series cellphone has stunningly compact QWERTY keyboard is something that makes this phone stand apart from the rest. The 20 buttons are aligned in four rows systematically to make sure you make the best out of this cellphone.
MicroUSB port sits on the left side of the phone, but a plastic flap to cover the port is missing which would have been an added feature if it had. The power button is on the top and 3.5 mm headphone jack sits right next to it. The right hand side of the E55 has buttons for volume control, voice control and camera buttons.

Nokia E55 relies on the 3rd Edition Symbian OS S60, and the functionality of the cellphone is very much similar like that of E71. Switching between profiles is also a good feature that comes with E55, where you can switch between business and personal profiles instantly without much fuss.

Nokia E55 is loaded with other regular features like 3.2 megapixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 3G with HSDPA 10.2 Mbps, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth with A2DP, WAP, Stereo FM with RDS, Digital Compass, GPS receiver with A-GPS, Document Editor with MS Office 2007 and microSD card slot that supports up to 16GB, 2GB included with the box.

Samsung Jet S800 White

Samsung’s S8000 Jet is right on time as there is more hype in the mobile market and people are looking out for gadgets than can help them make their jobs easier and faster.w has everything like style, entertainment and impressive handling that will make heads turn when you own it. Samsung phones are always in competition with Nokia and Sony Ericsson and many a times the mobile phone design by Samsung wins the competition.

Samsung S8000 Jet is good on all web portals because it is a good multimedia phone with touchscreen. Samsung Jet looks very good in hand and is almost the same size as LG Arena, but it is lighter in weight than LG Arena. One not so good thing about Samsung Jet is that looks very similar to other Samsung touch-enabled phones and Samsung engineers need to work on it to make sure Samsung phones have their own distinctive looks.

Jet’s front panel is dominated by the large 3.1 inches high resolution screen that beats LG Arena and also leaves behind the LG Arena in weight and size department. Added with AMOLED technology, Samsung Jet gives a better screen contrast and top-class image quality.

Below the screen it has a Call and End button with a cube shaped button in the centre that gives Samsung Jet a different look from the rest. The left side of the Jet handles volume rocker and the right side has Lock key and shutter keys. The top handles 3.5 mm audio jack and microUSB. The 5.0 megapixel camera with dual LED flash sits on the back of Samsung Jet.

Additionally, it also has features like Wi-Fi, GPS receiver, built-in accelerometer, TV out, Stereo FM with RDS, Bluetooth 2.0 and web browsers that support Java and Flash.

ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet with Android

Wednesday, September 16, 2009

ARCHOS comes prepackaged with a bunch of Applications and the company highlights 10… interesting to see which ones they chose: Deezer, Dailymotion, twidroid, ebuddy IM, droidin, quickpedia, ThinkFree Mobile, CraigsPhone, Move, High Paying Jobs. Interesting choices and nice ones at that.

ARCHOS 5 with Android has some awesome features including numerous hard drive options that will store up to half a terabyte and tons of multimedia love in addition to everything that is Android. But there are some downsides - two notable ones.

1. The ARCHOS 5 launches the mobile versions of sites by default since the webpages detect Android - a mobile browser - and assume that is the best way to display. Hopefully ARCHOS updates the default Android Browser to override the setting that indicates it is a mobile browser when loaded by web servers.
2. While the HTC Hero enables Flash for Android, the capability was probably licensed and ARCHOS has not licensed anything so we get the default Android abilities. Which means no flash. Which means no streaming video on the web. Until Adobe launches Flash 10 at least or this capability is made as a core Android function.

ARCHOS 5 Internet Tablet with Android is already allowing pre-order via Amazon!

* Archos 5 (Android): 32GB $379.99

* Archos 5 (Android): 160GB $329.99

* Archos 5 (Android): 500GB $429.99

LG GW620 aka LG Etna announcing

LG-GW620 features a 3-inch full touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keypad to meet the growing needs of consumers who rely on their mobile phones for more than just making calls. The LG-GW620 benefits from an operating system that was created from the ground up to take advantage of the many mobile applications and services developed by search leader Google.

In anticipation of strong demand for smartphones that support social networking functions right out-of-the-box, the LG-GW620 also lives up to LG’s consumer-friendly design philosophy by making the smartphone experience more accessible for typical users. At the same time, LG’s messaging phones have traditionally been very popular with young professionals who demand a full QWERTY keypad for a fast mobile computing experience. The LG-GW620 manages to meet the needs of both types of users simultaneously.

“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”

LG announced in early September that it will be introducing a minimum of 13 new smartphones over the next 16 months that utilize Microsoft’s Windows Mobile. The newest release, version 6.5, was announced just last week.

The LG-GW620 will be available in the fourth quarter of this year in select European markets.

The Palm Pixi, which will be out in the US in time for Christmas, has a slightly smaller screen than its predecessor in order to make way for a full qwerty keyboard.

The Pixi will also run Palm’s WebOS, bringing with it all its unique features such as the combined contacts database that pulls in information from Facebook. It will also get full multi-touch support on the screen and the gesture area underneath the display. The 3.5-ounce Pixi boasts a full keyboard, a 2-megapixel camera, 2.63-inch multitouch screen with 320×400 resolution, GPS, Bluetooth and accelerometer.
